Nikki Deakin of ND Interior Design, based in Derbyshire, has been commissioned to design the new show home for Trent Basin Phase 3, which is planned to open its doors to visitors in Spring 2021. She also intends to source fabrics, furnishings, artwork and more from local designers, manufacturers and artists to showcase their work and to lend her views and advice on upcoming interior designs trends that will influence our styling choices for the months and year ahead.

As many are experiencing, it continues to be a strange and challenging time to research new products, furnishings and accessories for a full show home design and reveal.

But I’ve discovered that our East Midlands designers and makers are a resourceful crew. Online offerings are ever improving, samples are readily available and although a telephone conversation is not the same as a face to face, it is still great to chat about new product designs in planning and even thoughts and plans for next year and post lockdown.

My mood boards are being populated and I’m looking at the colour palettes tipped to emerge in 2021, with a move away from the cooler grey tones in preference for warm neutrals with a restful feel – perfect for Trent Basin. Dulux’s Colour of the Year 2021 is ‘Brave Ground’ a light but earthy colour with a cosy feel – and very nature based. Then there’s more greens, alongside deep mulberry and plum and deep water blue – really tranquil accent colours.

And if you think this is all rather detailed, well it is! Colour can have such an influence on our mood and can say a lot about your personality and the feel that you want to create in your home.

At Trent Basin, I already know that the overall design has to reflect its location, its contemporary design (with an industrial twist as a nod to the heritage), an evident culture of sustainability and links with the waterside and green spaces that thrive there.

Trent Basin as a whole has been so considered to ensure sustainability is woven throughout – so it’s vital that I nurture and reflect this theme in the new show home’s interior design, by using and supporting local business’ where we can and sourcing ethical products by breathing new life into pieces.

My overarching vision is for the home to be reflective of the area and echo the calming natural aesthetic that is literally on the doorstep. And it’s very likely that we will be incorporating a slither of that ‘Brave Ground’ colour somewhere in the home!

Phase 3 of the Trent Basin development is currently under construction and will compromise of 31 new homes — a mix of two, three- and four-bedroom properties to suit a range of buyers. The first homes will be ready to move into from Spring 2021. Take a look at the Find A Home page for more details.
